The Client: Dance Arts- Fire... Where There's Smoke
Probed the social and emotional matrix that surrounds violent acts and explored the tragic consequences of violence. Brief, poignant live-theatre vignettes were woven together with video images that cascaded from on-stage screens to blend with the live action, all set to a powerful and original sound track composed for the show. The research for the show was gathered during workshops with over 400 teenagers.
The Challenge: Artemis was asked to prepare a print piece that would supply the audience with educational resources on violence and its prevention, and on their rights and responsibilities under the Charter of Rights, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Canada's newly introduced Youth Criminal Justice Act. We developed a 16-page booklet that summarized the issues of youth violence (including gay bashing) and gave resources for help. It also served as a show program for Vancouver, Victoria and Prince George, resulting in a more cost-effective solution for DanceArts. The Solution: We chose a CD-insert format, making it easy for kids to stash in a pocket for later reading. Artemis also secured media coverage in all daily and weekly media in Vancouver and Victoria, resulting in sold-out performances in both venues.
